A garage or garden shed might seem like free storage, but temperature swings and damp are hard on wood, fabric and metal fittings over time. Self storage units are built specifically to keep contents dry and secure, which matters far more for furniture than for most other belongings.

Renovation storage is one of the most common reasons customers store furniture with us — clearing a room entirely lets tradespeople work faster and protects your furniture from dust, paint and physical damage during the work. Downsizing is another: moving to a smaller home often means storing furniture you're not ready to sell while you decide what to keep.

We also see furniture storage used for staging a home for sale (removing bulky pieces to make rooms feel larger for viewings) and for the gap between selling one home's furniture and buying for the next.

Units are clean, dry and individually alarmed. For best results, we'd recommend wrapping upholstered items and wooden furniture with covers (available on site) before storing, and raising items slightly off the floor with pallets or boards where possible — our team can advise on the best layout for your unit when you move in.

A few weeks during a renovation and a year or more between homes call for slightly different preparation. For short stays, a quick wipe-down and a cover is usually enough. For anything longer than a couple of months, it's worth being more thorough — full wrapping, raising items off the floor, and leaving a little airflow space between pieces rather than pushing everything flush against the walls.
