Storing locally instead means you can move out on schedule, keep your belongings secure and dry over summer, and move back in without the round trip — or hand off a unit to a new tenancy address entirely if you're not returning to the same building.

Bedding, kitchenware, books, a desk or chair, a mini-fridge, boxes of clothes and the general accumulation of a university year. Most students find a 6ft container comfortably fits one room's worth of belongings, with a 10ft container giving extra breathing room for bulkier items or if you're sharing a unit with a flatmate to split the cost.

Label boxes by room or item type rather than just piling everything in — it makes the return trip far quicker when you're trying to find bedding or kitchenware on move-in day at the start of term. Wrap anything fragile properly, and keep valuables or anything irreplaceable separate if you're at all unsure about storing them.

If you're sharing a unit with flatmates, agree upfront on roughly how the space will be split and who's responsible for what — it avoids awkward conversations later about whose boxes are blocking whose. A simple photo of the packed unit before you lock up is a good habit too, in case anyone needs to check what's where over the summer.
