A storage unit packed well saves you money — you fit more in a smaller size — and saves you time every time you need to find something. Here's how to do it properly the first time.
1. Plan Before You Load
Sketch a rough layout before the van arrives: tall, sturdy items at the back and sides, a walkway down the middle if you'll need regular access, and everything you'll want soon near the front. Five minutes of planning avoids an hour of re-stacking later.
2. Go Vertical, Not Just Deep
Floor space is only half your unit — use the height too. Sturdy boxes and furniture can be stacked safely; just keep heavier items lower and lighter, fragile ones on top.
3. Disassemble What You Can
Bed frames, table legs, flat-pack furniture — take apart anything that breaks down easily. It's more space-efficient, and flat pieces are far easier to stack safely than an assembled frame.
4. Protect Furniture Properly
Wrap upholstered furniture and wooden pieces with covers rather than stacking boxes directly against them. We stock furniture covers and bubble wrap on site if you need them on the day.
5. Label Every Box, on More Than One Side
Write the room and rough contents on at least two sides of each box, not just the top — once boxes are stacked, the top is often the only side you can't see.
6. Keep an Inventory
For anything beyond a handful of boxes, a simple list of what's in each numbered box saves real time later. It doesn't need to be fancy — a note on your phone works fine.
7. Use Uniform Box Sizes Where Possible
Mismatched box sizes waste space and stack less securely. A run of same-sized boxes stacks tighter and more safely than a mix of shapes.
8. Leave an Access Path if You'll Return Often
If you're storing long-term but will need occasional access, don't pack wall-to-wall. Leave a narrow path to items you might need, even if it costs a little extra space.
9. Keep an Inventory of What Can't Go In
Some items shouldn't go into storage at all — perishables, hazardous materials, and anything flammable. Check our FAQs if you're unsure about a specific item.
10. Don't Overfill on Day One
If you're not sure everything will fit, load the heaviest and least-needed items first and save flexible items — soft bags, small boxes — for last. They're easier to fit into whatever space is left.
